Walkers head out into University Circle on last year's AIDS walk in Cleveland,

Three new agencies to benefit from AIDS Walk

Cleveland-The Dr. John T. Carey Memorial AIDS Walk has announced the addition of three new HIV and AIDS service organizations to those benefiting from the October 7 event in Cleveland's University Circle. Joining the roster are Camp Sunrise, Community AIDS Network, and Proyecto Luz.

The inclusion of an Akron agency will make the walk, the largest HIV and AIDS fundraiser and awareness event in northern Ohio, a true regional collaboration. Community AIDS Network provides housing-permanent supportive housing through Harmony

Place, and transitional housing through Micah House-plus outreach and education. "Community AIDS Network is thrilled to be an active participant in this year's Dr. John T. Carey Memorial AIDS Walk," said CAN executive director Libby Wilson. “We are looking forward to not only benefiting financially from this group endeavor, but also in helping to spread the word within the Northeastern Ohio area that HIV/AIDS is still a major health issue in our communities."

Camp Sunrise is the only statewide summer camp for children living with and affected by HIV and AIDS. In addition to a week-long recreationally therapeutic camp packed with outdoor activities each summer,

Camp Sunrise also provides year round activities for campers and their families.

Though a faith-based, culturally competent partnership, Proyecto Luz (Project Light) reduces the negative impact of HIV and AIDS in the Greater Cleveland Latino community. This is accomplished through spiritual counseling, outreach, testing, prevention and supportive services in a safe, compassionate environment.

Each of the new agencies are joining the walk at the associate member level, meaning they will receive a pre-determined amount of walk proceeds each year.

Returning beneficiaries are the AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland, the Free

Medical Clinic of Greater Cleveland, the Agape Program of Antioch Baptist Church, the Cleveland LGBT Community Center, Planned Parenthood of Greater Cleveland, the Women's Center of Greater Cleveland, Hispanic Urban Minority Alcoholism and Drug Addiction Outreach Project and the Ohio AIDS Coalition.

Complete information on the walk, including registration forms, can be obtained at www.cleveland.com/AIDSwalk or by calling 216-621-0766 x 275.
